Tips for Finding a Research Mentor

 

Here are some tips for identifying a research mentor:

 

1.      Read Choosing a Research Mentor: Some Pointers, by Dr. Glew

2.      Check the Faculty Mentor List (http://hsc.unm.edu/som/education/UME/Research/docs/MentorsList.htm) for faculty who are interested in mentoring student research and their research interests

3.      Search for key words of interest on the HSC Research Sponsored Projects web page (http://hsc.unm.edu/research/sponsored.shtml)

4.      Search the PubMed listing on HSC Research Faculty Publications web page (http://hsc.unm.edu/research/publications.shtml)

5.      Ask your fellow medical students

6.      Contact the Department Chairperson’s office requesting names of faculty who may be doing research in your special interest areas

7.      Check the Completed Research Projects by Class (http://hsc.unm.edu/som/education/UME/Research/projects.shtml) for projects which have to do with your area of interest and contact the faculty who mentored those projects

8.      Check the Completed Research Projects, Research Projects by Mentor 2001-2005 (http://hsc.unm.edu/som/education/UME/Research/projects.shtml) for the above projects listed by mentor name

9.      Ask faculty for suggestions
