The Faculty and Administration of the BS EMS Program are committed to respecting the professionalism and wide range of professional experiences that our degree candidates bring to the program.
Our Faculty will be conducting sessions in a dynamic, group participation, and self-directed seminar style. Project assignments will be realistic, and case-based, or problem-based. Indeed, cooperative and competitive dynamic workshops will be the hallmarks of the BS EMS educational experience.

It is recognized that most candidates for this degree will begin their post secondary education at the technical first responder and emergency medical technician levels. It is also anticipated that many of the candidates will begin their academic course work at UNM branch campuses and other two year colleges. A seamless transition from the two-year programs is intended, with full credits awarded for appropriate courses completed at those programs.
The B.S. EMS degree is intended to prepare graduates to meet the professional educational needs of prehospital care providers. All graduates of the BS EMS Degree Program will be qualified for New Mexico licensure and national registration as paramedics.. Three major areas of concentration are offered: clinical care, education, and administration. The BS EMS degree may also be earned with no declared concentration.
The Baccalaureate Degree concentration in Clinical Care
This concentration is intended to meet the needs of the prehospital care provider who is interested in advanced training and specialized care, e.g., aeromedicine, industrial medicine, or mobile intensive care. This concentration does not expand the scope of practice of the paramedic beyond the New Mexico State licensure scope of practice, nor beyond national standards for paramedic practice.
The Baccalaureate Degree concentration in EMS Administration
This concentration is intended to meet the professional educational needs of individuals who are interested in careers in emergency medical services administration and management.
The Baccalaureate Degree concentration in EMS Education and Training
This concentration is intended to meet the professional educational needs of those individuals who are interested in a career in prehospital emergency medical care education and training.
New candidates for admission to the University of New Mexico BS EMS Degree Program must complete the standard UNM application for admission and designate their desired major as EMS. Current UNM students must indicate their interest in the BS EMS program through the Academic Advising Office or the Admission's Office. The Admission's Office will forward all requests for admission to the BS EMS degree program to the EMS Academy.
