It is a goal of the UNM EMS Academy to develop courses that are on the cutting edge of Mountain Medicine. This unique Mountain Medicine course is modeled after the UNM School of Medicine, Wilderness International Improvisational Medical School rotation that takes place every March throughout New Mexico for 4th year Medical Students and Residents. The EMS academy has also derived the course syllabus from the international Diploma in Mountain Medicine from the UIAA International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation and the International Society of Mountain Medicine (ISMM). In the near future we hope to have our courses endorsed by these pioneering organizations.

This course is intended for medical professionals who participate in mountain recreation or are mountain professionals such as guides or Mountain Rescue personnel with a current EMT- Intermediate, Paramedic or Nurse license. Upon completion of the course students will receive a course completion certificate from the UNM EMSA. If the participant is a licensed Paramedic he or she will hold the certificate title “Mountain Emergency Paramedic.” If the student is a licensed Nurse he or she will hold the certificate title, “Mountain Emergency Nurse.”
