About the Center of Excellence

The Hispanic and Native American Center of Excellence (COE) was established at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in 1998 through a grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration, Bureau of Health Professions, Division of Health Careers Diversity & Development (Grant # 1D34 MB 04055-01).

The purpose of our center is to increase the number of Hispanic and Native American health providers, researchers, and medical school faculty to enhance the availability and quality of healthcare services in New Mexico. This is accomplished through the development, professional growth, and refinement of medical students and faculty, and through communicating these efforts to the regional and national health care community.  The COE promotes research, analysis, and sharing of information that directly benefits health promotion, education, and culturally competent healthcare delivery.

Goals of the Center of Excellence

Student Recruitment:   To encourage the recruitment, enrollment and graduation of qualified underrepresented minority students (African American, Hispanic, Native American) into careers in medicine.

Student Performance:  To improve the academic performance of underrepresented minority students in medical school through mentoring, tutoring, library resources, USMLE, Step 1 review, and career development.

Faculty Recruitment, Training and Retention: To encourage the development of Hispanic and Native American junior faculty through mentoring, and training in research methods and academic writing.  To improve the capacity of the medical school to recruit, train, and promote underrepresented minority faculty.

Clinical Education, Curricula, and Cultural Competence:  To deepen the understanding in these areas of medical school training to include curriculum, research, and clinical skills development regarding Hispanic, Native American and other minority health issues.

Faculty and Student Research: To increase student and faculty research with respect to Hispanic and Native American health issues.
