TASSY PARKER, Ph.D., R.N.

Tassy Parker, Ph.D., R.N.   Dr. Parker is an enrolled member of the Seneca Nation and lived most of her life on the Cattaraugus Territory, which is located in western New York State.  She received undergraduate degrees in nursing and sociology and graduate degrees in sociology at the University of New Mexico.  Dr. Parker is a Research Assistant Professor at the UNM Health Sciences Center School of Medicine, Departments of Psychiatry and Family and Community Medicine.  As a medical sociologist, her research focuses on social determinants of health, particularly as they are experienced by American Indian youth.  In addition, Dr. Parker’s research interests include psychological trauma and mental health/substance abuse, primary care and mental health, and mental health and chronic disease such as diabetes. She is actively involved in the development of a Center for Native American Health and in mentoring Latino and American Indian undergraduate and graduate students interested in mental health research.
