Dual Status Programs

The Masters in Public Health Program also offers dual degrees in collaboration with other UNM departments. Students presently are working on or have graduated with individual dual degrees in the following:

  • Masters in Public Health/ Nursing (MPH/MSN)
  • Masters in Public Health/Doctor of Medicine (MPH/MD)
  • "Individual” - Masters in Public Health/Masters in Community and Regional Planning
  • "Individual" - Masters in Public Health/Masters in Health Education
  • Other individual dual degrees can be created by individual students. Please see the information below for the individual degree.

The official dual degree between nursing and public health, the MPH/MSN, was approved in Spring 2000, enabling students to acquire the dual degree with 2/3 credits.

Students in a doctoral program may also pursue an MPH degree under the following conditions:

  • Students must have written permission from their doctoral program to pursue the masters degree
  • Students must complete a Self-Managed Application and be formally admitted to the MPH Program.
  • Students must adhere to the seven-year rule for completion of all requirements for the master’s degree.
  • Students must adhere to the five year rule for completion of the doctorate.
  • If the time needed for completion of the master’s degree will extend beyond the completion of the doctoral degree, the student must have a Program of Studies for the master’s degree approved by the Dean of Graduate Studies before the doctoral degree is  awarded.

Individual Dual Degree

Individual dual degrees may be organized by students with any department. Students in dual degree programs must complete both degrees in the same semester. The students must prepare a written rationale for the dual degree and a chart outlining the requirements for both degrees and shared credits. This must be approved by the MPH Program Director, the Director or Chair of the other Department and with student advisors of both departments. The agreement must be signed by all parties involved.

The student must meet all requirements for both master's degrees; a maximum of 6 hours from each field may be shared between the two programs.

For more detailed information on the individual dual degree program, see the UNM Catalog page 63, It is the 65 page of the PDF file.
