Fundamentals of Public Health
Provides the basics of public
health, its history and development, the current organization of public health
activities, the concept of population as a unit of measurement, epidemiology, an
ecological model of disease causation, surveillance, monitoring, and planning.
Health Program
Planning and Evaluation
Presents a rational
health-planning model of assessment, intervention, and basic evaluation
techniques. This course covers a broad overview of planning, including the role
of evaluation and the use of logic models in evaluation.
Epidemiology
Covers the basics of the
science that is the foundation of public health. Content includes
definitions, population units, models of disease causation, determining
risk, surveillance and monitoring, and application of epidemiological data
to public health practice.
Group Facilitation Skills
Explores the role of the
facilitator and the assumptions and values inherent in different
facilitation styles. Participants will learn and

practice: leading a
group discussion, gathering information, setting priorities in a group,
nominal group process and action planning.
Participatory Community
Assessment
Presents an overview of community needs/capacity assessment. The
course will define and describe the types and common methods of community
assessment. Encourages a broad view of public health that has, as its
foundation, a social, ecological framework for improving the community’s
health and well-being.
Health Promotion
Examines the concept of health promotion within an ecological
framework that emphasizes a multifactorial approach to disease causation and
program implementation.
Social Epidemiology
Examines the psycho/social/political factors in populations
and communities that contribute to illness and disease. The course provides
an ecological model for community health planning.
