Curriculum

MPH ClassThe Masters in Public Health Program curriculum promotes an interdisciplinary and comprehensive approach to research and interventions to address health problems, provides multiple opportunities for students to practice public health skills in communities, and fosters critical thinking about issues addressed by the students. Students will be drawn from a broad range of social science, biomedical science, and clinical disciplines.

The program strives for the following:

  • Provide comprehensive education in the core functions and disciplines of public health within graduate and community-based curricula;
  • Incorporate a social-ecologic systems approach which identifies and intervenes in conditions that influence health and disease, e.g. racism, poverty, lack of access to care, inequities in health status, and lack of human rights;
  • Develop problem-based and problem-focused curricula drawn from community issues, research, and practice relevant to the region;
  • Integrate theory and practice through community-level experiences throughout the curriculum;
  • Develop graduate concentrations and certificates, as appropriate, in epidemiology, environmental health, health care policy and management, and community health sciences/intervention;
  • Develop models which integrate education in public health with primary care settings and other clinical practices.
