The Southwest Alcohol Research Group (SARG) is pleased to announce the availability of funds to conduct pilot projects in support of alcohol-related research, particularly research focusing on interventions related to alcohol use, abuse and dependence among Hispanic, Native American and other rural poor communities in the Southwest.
Goals
The overall goal of the SARG is to promote an agenda that fosters research to identify, characterize and evaluate culturally supported interventions (CSI's) already in use; and to develop and test strategies for disseminating empirically supported interventions (ESI's) to prevention specialists and treatment providers in Hispanic, Native American and rural communities. This agenda is aligned with the aims and objectives of the SARG and includes attention to the following four areas:
SARG pilots will launch innovative lines of rigorous, alcohol-related research -- including evaluation of culturally supported interventions (CSI's) and translation of empirically supported interventions (ESI's) -- within the populations identified above. They will also implement systematic processes for dissemination and adaptation of ESI's within the target populations, and to bring awareness and appropriate evaluation of CSI's into the academic environment. Research projects explicitly directed at developing the scientific knowledge base for supporting the development of CSI's found in innovative community programs into ESI's, including evaluations of current community programs, are especially encouraged. Projects that involve local collaboration with local programs and that maximize linkages between investigators, SARG Community Advisory Board (CAB) members, and communities, are also encouraged.
The application should include a statement regarding the investigator's dedication to working with SARG target populations and meeting these SARG objectives. This should include a statement regarding how the pilot will help the investigator to initiate a program of research relevant to SARG goals and how dissemination of results and other knowledge sharing between the investigator and community will be accomplished.
