University of New Mexico Clinical Update Program (CUP) for Physician Assistants
In 2007, the New Mexico Medical Board extended the existing regulatory requirement for
refresher training for physicians out of clinical practice for 2 years or more to include
Physician Assistants (PA). (NMAC 16.10.15.10.B) The goal of the requirement for clinical
update training is to insure that New Mexico providers are practicing medicine with skills
that are proficient and a knowledge base that is current with national standards of care.
Clinical update training for physicians and physician assistants in New Mexico is provided
through the University of New Mexico Health Science Center, School of Medicine, Department of
Graduate and Continuing Medical Education (CME Department). Clinical update training for
physician assistants is conducted under these auspices by the UNM Physician Assistant Program
in conjunction with selected clinical sites within UNM/UNMH affiliated medical services and
clinics.
