Approximately 19 Family Medicine faculty, 8 upper-level residents, 5-6 interns and 4-5 mid-level providers are joined by psychiatrists, clinical pharmacists, RN case managers, social workers, our behavioral psychologist, and dedicated nurses and staff members to provide broad spectrum primary care. The patient population is diverse and includes all ages.

The PHS Indian Health Center is immediately east of UNM Hospital on the grounds of the historic tuberculosis sanitarium, the first healthcare facility in the area. In 1981, a new ambulatory care addition with 20 exam rooms was built. In 2003, the 32,609 user population made about 90,138 visits to the outpatient clinics of the primary care providers. Native Americans belonging to over 400 distinct tribes visit our facility with a majority of visits coming from local Pueblo Indians and members of the Navajo Tribe. Most of the clinicians are family physicians, some are boarded in internal medicine or pediatrics. All have lived and worked on regional reservations. Two nurse practitioners and an occasional NP or PA student work concurrently. A radiologist is available during regular appointment times, an on-site pharmacy is helpful to both patients and providers and specialty clinics are frequently held in the facility. Residents can schedule time to participate in the diabetes education program and colposcopy clinics. The Behavioral Health Department is staffed with psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors and social workers. Optometry clinic is staffed with two optometrists and a student. The laboratory is available on site. Procedures available include colposcopy, LEEP, endometrial biopsy, and IUD insertion.

Residents interested in working with Native American populations in urban, reservation or tribal sites will be especially interested in this clinic. The population is skewed toward the younger ages. The majority of patients are female so there are many opportunities to develop a practice strongly oriented to women’s health and OB within a full spectrum practice.

The 1209 clinic is located on University Boulevard adjacent to Martineztown and UNM’s main campus, not far from downtown Albuquerque. This is a multidisciplinary clinic with participation from Family Medicine and Internal Medicine. Our patient population is mixed, with many of our clients coming from Albuquerque’s lowest income neighborhoods. However, we also attract a range of patients including UNM students and employees, professionals, and insured patients from all income levels.
The interests and areas of expertise of our faculty are varied and include obstetrics, dating OB ultrasound, minor surgery/dermatology procedures, and gynecologic procedures including colposcopy and LEEP. We are assisted by an on-site social worker, RN case manager, and diabetic educators. Brad Samuel, a clinical psychologist, sees our patients in consultation on site on a weekly schedule.
Our greatest asset at 1209 is a collegial and friendly environment between the various medical specialties and staff. We are an independent, self-governing group dedicated to innovation, collaboration and excellence.

The Southeast Heights Center for Family Health is located in a multicultural, multi-ethnic, low-income area of the Southeast Heights. The family health clinic is part of a “Health Care Commons,” which serves the community and includes the Young Children’s Health Center, the Maternity and Infants Program, as well as a multi-use center which houses WIC, Public Health and other services.
Three faculty Family Physicians, a Physician Assistant, a Nurse Practitioner, a Clinical Psychologist and a Psychiatrist work with our residents and staff to provide care to our varied patient population, which is largely immigrant; the majority are from Vietnam, Cuba and Mexico. Fluency in Spanish or Vietnamese is essential.
The entire office is involved in a number of community projects. We have an ongoing smoking cessation project for Vietnamese men and plan to have a Doula project to provide pregnancy and delivery support to our population.
Residents with a strong interest in obstetrics and group practice are encouraged to consider this continuity site.

The First Choice Community Healthcare clinics were first funded through a PHS grant in 1972 and have grown into a network of six medical clinics from Alameda to Belen. The clinics offer primary care to all patients, regardless of age, socioeconomic status, or immigration status. There is a sliding fee scale for services.
The North Valley Clinic is located in a beautiful new city building, which also houses a dental clinic, M&I clinic and the WIC program. Valley High School is 500 yards away; Garfield Middle School and North Valley Senior Center are both within a mile.

Hours: 8am to 8pm, Monday through Thursday, with hours limited on Friday from 8am to 5pm. Almost all the staff is bilingual, and we recommend that the residents also speak Spanish, since about one third of our patient encounters are with Spanish speakers. Our provider staff includes core Family Practice attendings with several part-time Family Practice and Internal Medicine providers, a nurse practitioner, and a full-time Pediatrician. We also have a cardiologist who is on site 2-4 days per week, is an excellent teacher, and has wonderful physical diagnosis skills. We have 3-4 providers in clinic at any time, and we see about 1200 patients per month.
The North Valley Clinic is piloting a new diabetes collaborative. We see a very large population of women and children, and have a steady obstetrics population. This is an excellent site to practice obstetrics and pediatrics. There is also a pilot chronic pain clinic which blends western and alternative therapies.

The First Choice Community Healthcare clinics were first funded through a PHS grant in 1972 and have grown into a network of eight medical clinics from Edgewood to Belen. The clinics offer primary care to all patients, regardless of age, socioeconomic status, or immigration status. There is a sliding fee scale for services.
The South Valley Clinic is located in a beautiful new county building, which also houses a dental clinic, Public Health offices and the WIC program. The site is adjacent to Ernie Pyle Junior High School, South Valley Head Start and South Valley Senior Center. We have 23 exam rooms and 2 procedure rooms in addition to the dental clinic and community meeting space.
All the staff is bilingual and we recommend that our residents also speak Spanish, since about one half of our patient encounters are with Spanish speakers. By August we will have five Family Physicians on staff who provide comprehensive care for our diverse population. We are joined by a cardiologist two days per week who shares his wonderful physical diagnosis skills and provides consultation for our more challenging patients. We also have 2 pediatricians in our clinic, as well as a substance abuse counselor. We have 4-8 providers in clinic at any time, and we see about 1600 patients per month.
The South Valley Clinic is an excellent site to practice obstetrics and pediatrics; we see a very large population of women and children and have a steady obstetrics practice. We also perform colposcopies and minor office procedures. The clinic is piloting a new diabetes initiative in collaboration with the UNM Telehealth Program.
The South Valley Health Commons, of which the Family Health Clinic is an integral component, is planned as a model for integrating clinical medicine and public health. Students/residents from multiple disciplines will be encouraged to work together with community groups in the ongoing efforts to build a healthy South Valley community.
