The Albuquerque area provides superb opportunities for sporting event coverage. Fellows will be involved in the care of the University of New Mexico (Division I) athletic teams as well as sports teams in several high schools. Special community events such as rodeo and mass participation events may also be available for fellow involvement. Additionally, Albuquerque, with its Southwest mountainous and desert terrain, and with its year round sunshine and dry climate, offers the fellow incredible outdoor opportunities for sports and recreation.

Resident Training in Sports Medicine
The fellowship will provide the training needed to diagnose and manage injuries and illnesses related to sports and exercise. Fellows will gain expertise in injury prevention, pre-participation evaluation, return-to-play criteria, management of acute and chronic illness or injury, and rehabilitation. Fellows will function as a team physician and serve both individual patients and the community through the promotion of physical fitness and wellness.

All Family Medicine residents at UNM can take electives in Sports Medicine and can work with team physicians during sporting events. The Department runs a network of school-based clinics and has close working relationships with the Albuquerque Public School system and its team coaches.  The tentative weekly schedule for fellows can be found here: Schedule PDF
