Family & Community Medicine's Education Mission is to improve the health of the people and communities of NM through the education of medical students, residents, physician assistants, public health students, community physicians, and faculty. The Department’s Vice Chair of Education is John Leggott, MD.
The Department of FCM prepares resident physicians, medical, physician assistant, and public health students to:
Provide high quality, personal, continuing and comprehensive primary care service in interdisciplinary, community-based practice sites
Address family, community, social and population dimensions of illness
Balance health promotion, public health and disease prevention with the diagnosis, treatment, and management of chronic disease
Practice in areas of need
The Department emphasizes community-oriented, problem-based education in its service/learning sites. Education of graduate trainees and undergraduate students occurs both in the greater Albuquerque area as well as rural areas throughout New Mexico. Undergraduate medical students may participate in the following:
The Derm Quiz is a monthly teaching case with photos and a clinical scenario. Dan Stulberg, MD has published the quiz since 1999. It has been used by practicing clinicians as well as distributed to residents and as a teaching tool in residency conferences.
The Inpatient Quiz is started in 2008 and is written by Dan Waldman, MD based on his teachings as a Family Medicine Hospitalist. It covers topics of interest in hospital medicine.
Both of these quizzes are open to subscription for healthcare providers to review or enhance the participant's clinical skills. They are focused on practical care and not designed to stump most subscribers. » Clickhere for information on how to subscribe
