Graduate Medical Education
Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Residency
The Division of Child and Adolescent
Psychiatry, within the Department of Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico School of
Medicine, is fully accredited for eight residents, four residents in each of the two-years
of the training program. The emphasis of our training program is acquiring multicultural
competence, continuing endorsement of skill in psychotherapy, including play
therapy skills, multidisciplinary training and experience in community and rural
populations.
Multicultural experiences are rich in the state of New
Mexico and our program is committed to providing the residents with competency in this
area. A second commitment is to multidisciplinary training; therefore, the residents work
with Interns in a one-year Predoctoral Clinical Child Psychology Internship program and
Fellows in a one-year Social Work Post-MSW Fellowship program.
The first year of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry residency
is divided between inpatient (60%) rotations (including acute and residential cottages)
and outpatient (40%) rotations (Rapid Assessment Program; Psychopharmacology Clinics; and
Partial Hospital). In addition, two long-term therapy patients are assigned.
The second year is a combination of rotations including outpatient,
community/rural experiences, traditional consult and liaison; and school-based mental
health. Experiences are available with Native American pueblos through the community
rotations. Since the residency is based in an academic setting, residents, along with
their faculty, have the opportunity to teach and supervise general residents in
psychiatry, residents in family medicine and pediatrics, and medical students.
The enduring philosophy of our program is to prepare child
psychiatrists who can function in a variety of settings with a range of modalities
(psychopharmacologic, psychodynamic, family and group, cognitive
behavioral and short-term approaches). Residents work with children and their families
from infancy to adolescence in models emphasizing continuity of care. Developmental,
family and multicultural orientations are also emphasized. Strategies reflecting evidence
based on medicine are incorporated in the training.
