Geriatric Medicine Fellowship

The University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque, New Mexico offers an ACGME-accredited Fellowship in Geriatric Medicine. Board eligible or board certified physicians in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine are eligible. Appointments are made for one year, making candidates eligible for the Certificate of Added Qualifications in Geriatric Medicine, and are renewable for a second year.

At the University of New Mexico Hospital and Clinics there is a free-standing Senior Health Center that accepts ambulatory care patients for comprehensive geriatric assessment, using an interdisciplinary team approach. A number of specialty and subspecialty clinics (Orthopedic Surgery, Neurology, Psychiatry, Neuropsychology, Dermatology, Podiatry, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Oncology, Rheumatology) provide support. We also serve as medical directors and primary care physicians in four community nursing homes and serve as medical consultants on the Geropsychiatry Ward of the Mental Health Center, at Health South Rehabilitation Hospital, and on the inpatient services of UNM Hospital.

At the Albuquerque VA Medical Center, there are a 40-bed inpatient Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) Unit, restorative care unit, and short-term skilled nursing home beds, a home care program with Hospice, along with an ambulatory-care program.

There are twelve faculty physicians and six mid-level providers (physician assistants, nurse practitioners) staffing these programs. Residents from Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, and Psychiatry rotate through the service along with medical students and other health care professional students. There are numerous opportunities for research with faculty collaboration or supervision, especially in the affiliated Clinical Nutrition Research Center and in such fields as palliative care and pain management, sleep disorders, and the ethics of end-of-life issues.
