The Fellowship Program is a three year funded program for certification in Hematology and Medical Oncology. A two year program in either Medical Oncology or Hematology is also available. The fellowship is designed to provide an excellent clinical foundation in Hematology and/or Medical Oncology and to develop a strong foundation for an academic career. These programs have a required clinical core including rotations at the University of New Mexico Hospital clinical service, the Albuquerque Veterans Hospital, Radiation Therapy, Gynecological Oncology, Pediatric Oncology, stem cell transplant, and either surgery or hematopathology. Transfusion medicine, coagulation laboratory, stem cell transplant, and hematopathology are required for separate Hematology certification.
Outpatient clinical continuity clinics are required for two years at either or both the V.A. hospital and the University Hospital. In addition, the fellow is strongly encouraged to participate in the multidisciplinary chest tumor clinics at either hospital or the multispecialty breast clinic at the V.A. hospital and surgical breast clinics at the University. Clinical experience in genitourinary cancer is available as well. Fellow participation in and development of clinical trials is strongly encouraged. The University participates in the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) trials, the NSABP and the Gynecological Oncology Group clinical trials. Frequent presentations for conferences is required during the clinical period and the Division strongly supports presentations at national meetings.
Fellows have access to the resources of the University of New Mexico Medical Center and the research service of the Albuquerque V.A. A wide variety of active research programs is available for fellow participation the remainder of the fellowship period. The Division and the UNM Cancer Research and Treatment Center have strong basic cancer biology programs and clinical research programs. The New Mexico Tumor Registry and a federally sponsored Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database is housed at the Cancer Center with active programs in epidemiology. The SWOG leukemia repository and active genetic testing programs using these databases have placed New Mexico in the forefront of technological developments in these areas. The close proximity of Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories has allowed them to serve as areas of substantial collaboration in cancer related research. These are some of the areas of opportunity for fellows seeking a strong background for a career in cancer research.
To apply submit an UNM application form and have three letters of recommendation sent from individuals who are familiar with your work. Please be sure to include a statement of your career goals and possible research interests. We will respond with any further information we may need to review your application. Thank you for your interest in our program.
