Nephrology Fellowship

The Nephrology Program has eight full-time faculty, and affiliated faculty include a pediatric nephrologist and a renal pathologist. The Nephrology fellowship utilizes two acute care hospitals, University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center (UNMHSC) and Albuquerque Veterans Medical Center (VAMC). In addition we are affiliated with a large outpatient dialysis unit. UNMHSC is the only Level I trauma center in New Mexico. This provides trainees with a broad exposure to the diagnosis and treatment of acute renal failure. Through rotation on the consult service and outpatient clinics, trainees gain experience in the diagnosis and management of hypertension, acid base disorder, fluid and electrolyte disorders and glomerulonephritis. Fellows become proficient in placement of acute vascular access and renal biopsy.

UNMHSC has an active renal transplant program. During rotations on the transplant service trainees gain experience in all aspects of renal transplant including pre-transplant evaluation, post operative management, immunosuppression and management of long term complications.

Our faculty have a broad range of research interests including diabetic nephropathy, clinical outcomes research, peritoneal dialysis, NMR spectroscopy, and the development of outreach programs into rural areas.
