The Sleep Medicine fellowship program is a multidisciplinary training experience, including faculty from Internal Medicine, Pulmonary, Psychiatry, and Neurology, led by John Doggett, MD as Program Director. Our clinical training is based in two sleep disorders centers, each accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine: The New Mexico Center for Sleep Medicine is a privately owned sleep disorders center with 10 beds, and the University of New Mexico Hospital Sleep Disorders Center, with 6 beds. Fellows spend 50% of each week in each center, providing consultation and diagnostic testing services to patients with all types of sleep disorders, including adults and children. Clinical care conferences, didactic lectures, and hands-on sleep testing experience are all used to produce a very well-rounded Sleep Medicine specialist in our one-year program. Clinical research is available and is increasingly recognized as a valuable part of the training experience.
The Sleep Medicine training program accepts two fellows per year from a variety of backgrounds. Applications must be accompanied by three letters of recommendation, and our deadline for application is May 15 of the year prior to training. This program is one of the first to be accredited by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
