Graduate Medical Education
Urology Residency
The four year urology residency program follows a
minimum of one year of a general surgery internship. Two residents
enter the program each year at the second year house office level.
The urology program is conducted by full-time teaching
staff at the UH and VAMC, where over 1,500 urological procedures are
performed annually. Residents also spend a portion of the fourth year at
Lovelace Medical Center, adding to their experience.
There are a range of conferences available to
residents. Residents are expected to conduct some clinical research project
during training.
The urology service deals with a wide variety of
problems, including renovascular hypertension, kidney transplants,
neurourology, stones, urologic oncology and pediatric urology. Lithotripsy,
endoscopic urology and laparoscopy are integral parts of the training. The
program is designed to qualify residents for either a private or an academic
career.
