UNM Cardiac Catheterization Center

The Division of Cardiology encompasses the entire spectrum of care of patients with cardiovascular disease. As such, faculty members of the division not only assume responsibility for the care of the entire patient, but also focus on highly specialized areas of patient care. The latter is a direct result of the explosion of knowledge and advances in technology in cardiovascular medicine over the past 20 years. Accordingly, the division is comprised of groups of individuals who provide such highly specialized services. These groups can be broadly categorized as follows- invasive and interventional cardiology; non-invasive cardiovascular imaging; electrophysiology; preventive cardiology; and several additional areas of particular interest that cut across the above disciplines (adult congenital heart disease, heart disease in women).

In addition to the clinical mission of the division, faculty members are engaged in specific areas of research within their sub-specialty. The reader is referred to the research activities section for further information. Finally, faculty members are continuously engaged in the education of students, physicians-in-training and each other. This is the essence of working within a university environment and it is this "culture" which is unique in the state of New Mexico.

New faculty

Dr. Bina Ahmed

Aggressively recruited to join the Cardiology Division and Cardiac Catheterization Center, Dr. Ahmed joined the faculty this past summer as an integral part of the interventional program. After growing up on both coasts, she pursued a medical career that led to the study of preventive cardiology followed by further training in cardiology and interventional cardiology at the University of Vermont. The end result of this unique training is an interventional cardiologist with a deep understanding and passion for the practice and study of comprehensive patient care and disease prevention.

Her area of particular interest is the study of gender discrepancies in cardiovascular outcomes and reducing vascular complications after coronary intervention. Her research has resulted in several first-author publications in peer-reviewed medical journals.

Outside of the hospital, Dr. Ahmed enjoys travelling primarily because it allows for exploration and growth, in addition to providing inspiration for her other interest – painting. She also enjoys time spent outdoors while snowboarding and hiking.

Dr. Bart Cox

Our most recent recruit, Dr. Cox, brings to the university and New Mexico our first fully board certified heart failure and heart transplantation specialist. After growing up and graduating from medical school in Indiana, he began his career in Milwaukee in 1986 and has since focused on the care of patients with heart failure and pulmonary hypertension, all the while accumulating several awards for his teaching.

Dr. Cox will join the already successful and growing Heart Failure Clinic at Medical Arts and direct the UNM Heart Failure Program.

When not at work, Dr. Cox enjoys attending cultural events with his wife, rooting for the Cincinnati Reds and Bengals, spending time reading and discussing the classics with his college-bound son, and in studies of cognitive therapy and first-century Palestinian history.
