Significant changes are under way at the UNM Health Sciences Center, and at the Heart and lifeguardVascular Center and Cardiac Catheterization Lab, in particular. Much of the change revolves around an institutional commitment to bolstering patient care and the cardiovascular service line. Under the direction of the Medical Director, Dr. Mark J. Ricciardi, the UNM Cath Lab has instituted or further developed the following services:

  • “One phone call” approach for direct-to-cath lab transfer for STEMI (click for Project AMI initiative)

  • Stream-lined patient transfer process for urgent transfers (acute coronary syndromes, unstable angina, etc.)

  • Coronary interventions. All percutaneous revascularization modalities available, including drug-eluting stents, bare-metal stents, atherectomy, thrombectomy, intravascular ultrasound, flow-wire.

  • Non-coronary cardiac interventions, including PFO/ASD closure, balloon valvuloplasty.

  • Peripheral vascular interventions, including renal artery and lower extremity angiography and interventions.

  • Unparalleled fixed-wing air ambulance critical care transport, including transportation of patients with  intra-aortic balloon pumps (UNM Lifeguard)
