What to expect as a patient
Our goal in the UNM Cardiac Cath Labs is to exceed the expectations
of our patients. As an academic medical center committed to excellence in
patient care, the Cath Lab has a “patient first” approach that melds nicely
with the inherent strengths of the teaching hospital environment.
Each patient cared for in the UNM Cath Lab is under the direct care of the
attending physician (Cath Lab Attending Physicians), who is the primary
operator for the procedure and is involved in all aspects of the patient’s
invasive cardiac care.
UNM cardiovascular fellows
assist the attending physician before, during, and after the procedure.
These physicians are pursuing advanced sub-specialty training in
cardiovascular medicine and have completed medical school and three years of
specialty training in internal medicine. Their ‘fellowship’ is the last step
before becoming board-eligible cardiologists.
What fellows do in the cardiac cath lab:
Fellows do not do:
The non-physician UNM Cardiac Cath Lab staff consists of registered nurses,
respiratory therapists, and radiology technicians specially trained in
invasive cardiology and dedicated to the "patient first" mission of the UNM
Cath Lab. Each of the staff work full time in the cath lab and are
dedicated and important members of the team of professionals involved in
patient care.
