Objectives:
Become familiar with the most common clinical endocrinology diseases.
Become familiar with the clinical emergencies in endocrinology.
Become familiar with the investigation issues current in clinical
endocrinology.
Develop a friendship with the endocrine faculty.
Specific Common Clinical Endocrinology Diseases:
Diabetes mellitus
Obesity
Thyroid disorders
Parathyroid disorders
Pituitary disorders of all trophic hormones
Hypothalamic disorders
Gonadal disorders
Impotence
Infertility
Genetic diseases
Metabolic bone disease
Hyponatremia
Lipoprotein disorders
Adrenal disorders
Endocrine Emergencies:
Diabetic ketoacidosis
Hyponatremia
Hypernatremia
Hyperosmolar coma
Adrenal crisis
Thyroid storm
Hypoglycemia
Components of Familiarity:
Understanding of pathophysiology
Understanding of natural history
Understanding of therapeutic interventions
Understanding of longitudinal clinical and laboratory evaluation
Understanding questions and issues that need to be resolved
Having access to appropriate text and serial literature
Strategies for the Four Week Experience:
Weekly supervised clinic experience with all faculty at both VAMC (Friday AM
and Wednesday AM) and UNMH (Monday AM and PM and Thursday AM)
Supervised consultation at both VAMC and UNMH
Weekly case conference with faculty, fellows, housestaff and students on
service. This consists of a case presentation by fellow or housestaff or
student to include formal discussion of case and reference list.
After hours call with consult attending.
Monthly Journal Club with dinner, with 3-4 articles selected by fellow,
copies available to all participants ahead of time, and summaries given by
housestaff and fellows.
Monthly joint specialty neuroendocrine conferences with Neurosurgeons and
Radiologists to discuss management issues of pituitary disease. This is held
the fourth Friday at 12:30 at UNMH department of radiology conference room.
(3rd Friday in November and December).
Monthly joint specialty pathology conference with VAMC and Lovelace
Pathologists and Endocrinologists to be held the first Tuesday of the month
at noon at the VA to review endocrine pathology.
Pre-rotation self-exam using MCAT endocrinology section.
Monthly nuclear medicine, radiology conference with VAMC radiologist and
endocrine staff to review endocrine imaging studies. This is held on the
last Wednesday of the month during Endo Case Conf. if there are cases to
discuss.
Staffing:
One of the full-time faculty is on call for consultation rounds, emergencies
and after hours call with houseofficer at both the VA and UNMH.
All clinics are staffed with faculty.
All conferences are staffed by all endocrinology faculty.
