Background & Expertise:
Dr. Hoffman holds his primary academic appointment in General Internal
Medicine and devotes a portion of his time to work at the Veterans'
Administration Hospital in Albuquerque. His secondary appointment in
Epidemiology and Biostatistics supports his interest in prostate cancer
research.
Dr. Richard M. Hoffman earned his MD from Johns Hopkins University School of
Medicine and his MPH in Epidemiology from the University of Washington. He
completed his residency in internal medicine at the Oregon Health Sciences
University.
Research Interests & Activity: Dr. Hoffman's research interests include
prostate cancer screening practices and outcomes, patient and physician
knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about screening, and clinical and quality
of life outcomes for men with prostate cancer. Dr. Hoffman has also
conducted research on low back pain, congestive heart failure, diabetes,
colorectal cancer screening, and dizziness. His educational interests have
focused on helping residents and students develop skills in critically
evaluating the medical literature and introducing concepts of clinical
epidemiology into medical practice. Dr. Hoffman's current research projects
include the SEER Special Study: Prostate Cancer Outcomes Study, and
Primary Care Colorectal Cancer Screening Surveillance System.
