Gastroenterology Fellowship Program

Mission Statement

Martin G. Kistin, MD
Professor of Medicine
Program Director, Gastroenterology Fellowship

The UNM Gastroenterology and Hepatology fellowship program provides fellows education and mentorship in both clinical and research gastroenterology and hepatology. All fellows achieve competence in clinical gastroenterology and hepatology and participate actively in the research process. Fellows may choose a research track with eighteen months of protected research time.

Fellows will be exposed to a broad spectrum of GI and liver diseases through their participation on the GI and Hepatology consult services at the University of New Mexico and the Albuquerque VA Medical Center. All clinical work is supervised by faculty who are board certified in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Fellows participate in specialty clinics for liver disease - including pre and post transplant management, inflammatory bowel disease, and hepatitis C. These clinics allow the fellow a concentrated experience and exposure to these patient populations supervised by clinical faculty with extensive experience in these areas.

Fellows have in depth experience with basic endoscopic procedures including treatment of gastointestinal bleeding and routine outpatient screening procedures. Interested third year fellows who demonstrate competence in basic endoscopy may be able to pursue training in ERCP.

Didactic teaching conferences on Thursday afternoons provide fellows a broad exposure to all aspects of Gastroenterology and Hepatology including pathophysiology, epidemiology, socioeconomics and ongoing research. Guest lectures by experts in all aspects of gastroenterology and hepatology are provided on a regular basis. Other conferences include a combined Radiology/Surgery/GI conference and Inpatient Case Conference.

Fellows take call from home on average once every twelve days over the three years. Fellows call is supervised by a board certified Gastroenterologist and attendings are present for all procedures.

The fellowship program is the core of our Division. Through input and guidance from our fellows, we are constantly striving to improve our program and provide our fellows with the best training experience possible.
