Chief
Dr. Herman is a Professor of Medicine. Dr. Herman graduated with both an MPH and MD degree from the University of Minnesota. She went on to obtain her Internal Medicine residency training at the University of Minnesota and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, OH where she also completed a 2-year Fellowship in Geriatrics. She has been at UNM since 1994 and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine. She practices at Senior Health Center.

Dr. Bennahum is a Professor Emeritus. After graduating from the University of Geneva School of Medicine in Switzerland, Dr. Bennahum completed a Medicine residency at Roosevelt Hospital in New York and earned a fellowship in Rheumatology/ Immunology. He specializes in Rheumatology and Gerontology. Dr. Bennahum speaks fluent French and is a professor in the Department of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Finlay received her MD Degree from the University at Buffalo, New York and completed her Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Pennsylvania and her Fellowship in Hematology/Oncology and Palliative Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology. Dr. Finlay joined our faculty in Internal Medicine in 2009.

Dr. Hemphill received his MD from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and completed his residency at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, where he also completed a Fellowship in Geriatric Medicine. Dr. Kitzes received her medical degree from Medical College of Pennsylvania 1974 and Masters of Public Health from Harvard University School of Public Health, 1980. Dr. Kitzes also received Palliative Care training through Oxford International Centre for Palliative Care in Oxford, England, under the tutelage of Dr. Robert Twycross and is board certified in the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, and Public Health and Preventive Medicine. As an Associate Professor in the Palliative Care Section, she is actively involved in medical education as the Curriculum Director for the School of Medicine BA/MD Program, the undergraduate Palliative Care Curriculum, the Medical Education Scholars program for faculty development and the School of Medicine’s Academic and Remediation Program.

Dr. Knoefel is a Professor of Medicine and Neurology. She obtained her MD at Ohio State and her MPH from Boston University. Dr. Knoefel completed her Internal Medicine residency at the University of Cinncinati and her Neurology residency at Boston University Medical Center. She finished Geriatric Neurology fellowship at Boston University. She joined the faculty in 1996. Her research is focused on cognitive impairment and she works with the MIND Institute. Section Chief, Palliative Care
Dr. Marr received her MD Degree from the University of Maryland Medical School and completed her Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Marr completed her Fellowship in Palliative Medicine at Harvard/Massachusetts General Hospital. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Care. Dr. Neale received her MD Degree from Stanford University School of Medicine and completed her residency at University of New Mexico School of Medicine. Dr. Neale completed an Integrated Geriatrics and Palliative Care Fellowship at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She is board certified in Internal Medicine, Geriatrics and Hospice and Palliative Care. Dr. Parker received her MD Degree from Temple University and completed her residency at UPMC – Shadyside in Pittsburgh. Dr. Parker completed her Geriatric Fellowship at the University of New Mexico. She is board certified in both Family Medicine and Geriatrics. Dr. Parker joined our faculty in Internal Medicine in 2009 and practices at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Albuquerque in the Home Base Primary Care Program.

Dr. Qaseem received her MD Degree from England, UK and completed her residency in Family Medicine at the University of New Mexico, School of Medicine where she also completed her fellowship in Geriatrics. She is board certified in both Family Medicine and Geriatrics and specializes in homecare. She is a member of the American Association of Home care physicians. CV (Find a Doctor)

Dr. Simpson is a Professor of Medicine and UNM HSC Associate Vice President for African American Health, Jack and Donna Rust Professor of Ethics and Director: UNM HSC SOM Institute for Ethics. She completed her MD at the University of New Mexico and finished her Internal Medicine training and Geriatric Fellowship at the University of New Mexico. She joined the faculty in 1998. Dr. Villareal is a Professor in the UNM Division of Geriatrics and is Chief of Geriatrics at the Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center. Dr. Volk is a graduate of UNM School of Medicine and completed her internal medicine residency at UNM. She joined the faculty in 2009. She is Director of the Palliative Care Services at the New Mexico Veterans Health Care System. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
