Geriatric Fellowship

The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico offers an ACGME one-year accredited comprehensive training Fellowship in Geriatric Medicine. The program provides subspecialty training in geriatrics to physicians who are board eligible or certified in internal medicine or family medicine. During this year the fellows will develop the clinical skills, judgment, demeanor, and professional ethics necessary to provide the highest quality of patient care to the elderly.

The program rotates both at the University of New Mexico and the Veterans Administration Hospital. At the University of New Mexico there is a free standing Senior Health Center that accepts ambulatory care patients for assessment using an interdisciplinary team approach. At the Albuquerque VA Medical Center there is an ambulatory care program, home care program, inpatient extended care unit and subspecialty clinics such as neurology, neuropsychology and memory disorder clinic. The fellow also gains experience in physical, occupational, speech, rehabilitation therapy and driver rehabilitation.

The year is divided into monthly rotations (one-two month blocks)

In addition to monthly rotations the fellow will have continuity experiences which include outpatient clinics, nursing home and home visit patient care. The fellow will attend a series of teaching conferences; Geriatric Interest Rounds, Journal Club, Pathology conferences, Creative Writing Sessions, Medical Grand Rounds and research training which will also include reviewing material pertinent to the geriatric boards.
