Arti Prasad, MD, FACP

Dr. Arti Prasad is the founding Section Chief of Integrative Medicine at the University of New Mexico's Health Science Center (UNM HSC). This section was created fairly recently to develop a comprehensive primary health care system based on an integrative approach that combines allopathic medical care with Complementary and Alternative medicine (CAM) using the best current evidence. In a very short time, under her leadership, UNM SOM is now a member of the national Consortium of the Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine (CAHCIM). CV (Find a Doctor)

Madhu Arora, MD

Cynthia Arndell, MD

I'm a native New Mexican, trained as a RN through UNM and was a nurse for 12 years. I subsequently went to medical school and residency through UNM as well. I was a physician at Lovelace for 6 years and then accepted a position as co-medical director for Healthcare for the Homeless. A faculty position in the dept of internal medicine became available in 2004 and I took it. I'm still very active in the medical student clinic through Healthcare for the Homeless and am working on a poverty medicine curriculum for the students. CV (Find a Doctor)

Jessica Bigney, MD

 Dr. Bigney is a graduate of the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and completed her residency training within Internal Medicine at UNM. Julie Broyles, MD

Dr. Broyles completed her Internal Medicine Residency at UNM after attending the University of Kansas School of Medicine. She joined the faculty in 1995 and is currently an Associate Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine. Her special interest is in the area of Diabetes Disease Management and population health. During 2006 she was appointed Medical Director of the Department of Internal Medicine. CV (Find a Doctor)




George Comerci, MD

Dr. Comerci has two principle interests here at UNM. Dr. Comerci has a particular interest in the evaluation and management of chronic pain, specifically the pharmacologic approach to chronic pain. He is also very involved in teaching students and housestaff. His specific interests involve teaching communication, physical examination skills and diagnostic reasoning. CV (Find a Doctor)




Edward Fancovic, MD

Dr. Fancovic has been active in primary care for his entire career, working in community health centers, private practice and academic practice. He is particularly interested in outreach to people living with HIV and to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities, both on campus and in Albuquerque at large. He was the lead ambulatory physician in developing and implementing the electronic medical record at University Hospital from 1999-2010. He has also served as a clinic medical director, as the co-director of tutor training, and (since 2009) as the clerkship director for internal medicine. He serves on numerous committees at the HSC, including the Admissions Committee, Committee for Student Promotions and Evaluation, Curriculum Committee, and the Advisory Council for Knowledge Management and Information Technology. He has worked in-depth with learners at all stages of professional development, from pre-matriculation shadowing to faculty training. The internal medicine residency program has honored him with the Unsung Hero Award in 2004; the UNM Physician Assistant Program gave him the Outstanding Service Award in 2005; and he received the Apple for the Teacher Award from the School of Medicine in 2010 for his contributions to resident education. Dana Fotieo, MD

Dr. Fotieo received her undergraduate degree from Texas Christian University. She is a graduate of the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. She is board certified in Internal Medicine. Dr. Fotieo provides primary care for patients at the 1209 Family Health Clinic. She also serves as an inpatient attending at UNM. Among her many duties as an Assistant Program Director for the Internal Medicine residency program, she coordinates the Thursday School educational curriculum for the residents. Robert Fritch, DO, MMM

Dr. Fritch is the Chief Medical Officer of UNM Medical Group and an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Department of General Internal Medicine. He most recently served as Executive Medical Director of Ambulatory Primary Care Medicine and was the lead physician for UNM’s Patient Centered Medical Home project. He graduated from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1984 and completed his Family Practice residency within the Henry Ford Hospital System in Detroit. In 2000 he completed a Masters of Medical Management from Tulane. He served as a Family Physician in Espanola, New Mexico before coming to UNM in 2005. During his first three years at UNM he was the DME and Program Director of the Osteopathic portion of UNM’s dual tract Family Practice Residency. Dr. Fritch is the physician who opened UNM’s LoboCare, a clinic for UNM and UNMH employees, and continues to see patients there. CV (Find a Doctor)

Ann Gateley, MD

Dr. Gateley, an emeritus professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, directed the department's residency program for more than two decades. She now practices at LoboCare Sports Medicine. CV (Find a Doctor)




David Gonzales, MD, MBA

Fred Hashimoto, MD

Dr. Hashimoto has been interested in computer applications to medicine. A graduate of Harvard Medical School, he is a professor of Medicine at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque. Jennifer Jernigan, MD

Dr. Jernigan is a graduate of the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. She completed her residency training and chief residency at the University of New Mexico. She joined the faculty at UNM in 1999 and is board certified in Internal Medicine. Her areas of interest include women's health and medical education. She practices General Internal Medicine in both the outpatient and inpatient settings. Philip Kroth, MD

Dr. Kroth, a former computer engineer, completed a National Library of Medicine sponsored research fellowship in biomedical informatics at the Regenstrief Institute at Indiana University. Before his fellowship he completed residency in internal medicine at The State University of New York at Buffalo and is a graduate of the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo. He is an assistant professor in the UNM Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center, where he is the Director for the Department of Biomedical Informatics Research, Training and Scholarship. He is also Associate Chief Medical Information Officer for UNM Hospitals.

Dr. Kroth directs UNM's Biomedical Informatics Fellowship Training Program and is the course director for the biomedical informatics curriculum in UNM Clinical and Translational Sciences Center's clinical research curricula. His research interests include developing health information technology interventions for smoking cessation, as well as measuring how health information technology impacts the quality and cost of healthcare. Margaret Lieberman, MD

Dr Lieberman is a graduate of the Northwestern University Medical School, and she completed her residency in Internal Medicine here at The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. Melissa Martinez, MD

Dr. Martinez, a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, was one of the founding physicians and Medical Director for University of New Mexico’s Westside Clinic. She completed the Medical Education Scholars program and served as chair for the Committee for Student Promotions and Evaluation (CSPEII) and Co-Director of the Family Medicine Clerkship. She was the Principle Investigator of two funded Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA) grants. In 2005 she left UNM to become Lead Physician at Presbyterian Family Health Clinic in Belen. In 2008 she returned to UNM as the UNM LoboCare Clinic Medical director. LoboCare Clinic has consistently received exceptionally high scores in patient satisfaction. Dr. Martinez has been a leader in the New Mexico Chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians and received two Chapter Service Awards. She is also co-chair of New Mexico Clinical Prevention Innovative for Immunizations (CPI I) a committee of the New Mexico Medical Society and the New Mexico Health Department tasked with improving the rate of immunizations in New Mexico. Her scholarly works include presentations at state and national Family Medicine conferences, a paper on seatbelt use among adolescents, a book chapter, a reviewer for American Family Physician and co-chair of the Advances in Primary Care seminars at UNM. J. Mitchell Simson, MD, MPH

Dr. Mitchell Simson is a New Mexican native and graduated from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in  1978. He is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine. He received his Masters of Public Health in 2009 from the Medical College of Wisconsin.  His area of greatest interest is the treatment of opioid dependency with opioid replacement therapy using methadone and buprenorphine. CV (Find a Doctor)




David M. Treeson, MD

Dr. Treeson’s training includes completion of Internal Medicine Residency at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center and two additional years of National Institute of Health funded research in the Clinical Investigator Pathway. Bronwyn Wilson, MD

Dr. Wilson is currently Professor of Medicine, and Vice Chair for Faculty Development & Diversity for the Department of Internal Medicine. She was also appointed Assistant Dean for Faculty Development for the Office of Academic Affairs, School of Medicine in 2008. Her main interests include Mentoring Junior Faculty, Health Literacy, Medical Education and Physician-Patient Communication.
