Northeast Heights Academy Clinic
Arti Prasad MD, Founding Section Chief [clinic: Tuesday from
8-12 AM].
Dr. Prasad is an Associate Professor of Medicine and the founding Section Chief
of Integrative Medicine. She completed an Associate Fellowship at the University
of Arizona with Dr. Andrew Weil in November 2003. She grew up in India and has a
lifetime of experience with natural and Ayurvedic medicine. She sees adult
patients and provides comprehensive assessment using the principles of
integrative medicine. Dr. Prasad works with Dr. Shelley in teaching the
integrative medicine curriculum at the UNM School of Medicine. She is actively
involved in various community wellness programs. Dr. Prasad specifically
provides counseling on herbs and supplements, integrative approaches to
menopause, arthritis, cancer and various other illnesses. Coverage: all forms of
insurance accepted (including UNM Care, Medicaid, Medicare).
Brian Shelley MD, Director of Integrative Medicine Education
[clinic: Monday AM, Wednesday-Thursday from 8AM-5 PM]
Dr. Shelley is a board-certified family physician and a founding member of the
Section of Integrative Medicine. He has worked with healers from Zimbabwe,
Africa to rural North Carolina. He teaches medical students and residents in
integrative approaches to chronic pain, mood disorders and other primary care
issues. Dr. Shelley sees patients of all ages for health and wellness, and for
any condition. He also directs the course in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction.
Coverage: all forms of insurance accepted (including UNM Care, Medicaid,
Medicare).
Westside Clinic
Mary Smith-Fassler DOM RN, Acupuncturist [clinic: Monday-Thursday from 8AM-5 PM].
Dr. Smith-Fassler has worked in the western medical field as an RN for the last 20 years. The last 10 years of her career have been devoted to education in the eastern tradition of medicine. Dr. Smith-Fassler is nationally board certified in acupuncture and Chinese herbology, and is New Mexico state board-licensed to practice as a Doctor of Oriental Medicine. Dr. Smith-Fassler’s special interest has been the integration of eastern and western medicine to better benefit patient care, and to promote overall patient satisfaction. She participates in the teaching of medical students and residents. Coverage: UNM Care covers acupuncture for post-operative dental pain and the nausea/vomiting associated with chemotherapy only; Medicare and Medicaid do not cover acupuncture; most other commercial plans accepted.
