How to Apply for our Pulmonary & Critical Care, Critical Care, or Sleep Medicine Fellowship
Program details and expectations:
Thank you for your interest in our Fellowship program, the
University of New Mexico Divisions of Pulmonary & Critical Care and Critical
Care Medicine focuses on education as a primary responsibility. It offers a
three-year combined Pulmonary/Critical Care Program or a two-year Critical
Care Program that devotes up to 24 months to clinical rotations and
electives, although the total clinical time may be adjusted to suit
individual career goals. Clinical training for the combined
Pulmonary/Critical Care Program is composed of four services: University
Pulmonary Consult, University Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), Veterans
Hospital Medical Intensive Care Unit and the VA consults The clinical
rotations are concentrated in the first two years of fellowship, leaving the
third and optional fourth years devoted primarily to research.). In
addition, all fellows are required to participate in a series of
conferences, teaching blocks, and lecture series which are designed to
provide a comprehensive background in theory and practice. At completion,
the physician will be board eligible for both Pulmonary and Critical Care
subspecialty certification's, and resources are available to extend training
for those interested in basic science or clinical research careers. Both
programs are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical
Education with consideration to our carefully designed curriculum and
dedicated faculty who ensures that fellows are well prepared for the
American Board of Medical Specialties Pulmonary and/or Critical Care
certification examinations.
Application Information
1. Complete your
application through the
Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). All
applications must come through this service. A complete application will
include the common application form, medical school transcript, personal
statement, USMLE/COMLEX scores, Dean’s letter, three to four letters of
recommendation and a passport-size photograph.
2. Once we have received
the application through ERAS, we will send you an e-mail through ERAS to let
you know whether or not you’ve been invited to interview with our program.
Graduates of Foreign Medical Schools
Applications will be accepted only through ERAS.
International Medical Graduates should apply through the ECFMG
office; see instructions at http://www.ecfmg.org or contact the ECFMG directly for further information.
In general, most International Medical Graduates we interview meet
the following requirements:
1. Green Card, J-1 Visa
or documentation of US Citizenship.
2. Valid ECFMG
Certificate with Clinical Skills Assessment certification
3. Evidence of a minimum
of 4 months of clinical experience in the United States,
preferably in an academic medical center setting
4. 3 of 4 letters of
recommendation from academic physicians you have worked with in
the U.S.
5. Minimum USMLE scores
of 210 on both Step I and Step II
6. Graduation must have
occurred no more than 2 years prior to the application
