The Office of Research supports faculty and staff investigators in the Department of Internal Medicine. The office also provides administrative support to the department and the Clinical and Translational Science Center especially in areas related to research.

In 2008, the National Institute of Health released the ranking of the Top 110 recipient institutions to include hospitals, institutes, medical schools, universities, etc. UNM's Department of Internal Medicine was listed as 50th in the nation as a recipient of extramural funding (not including R&D contracts awarded).

HSC Joins Premier NIH Research Program

The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center (HSC) became part of a prestigious National Institutes of Health consortium to accelerate health research findings in New Mexico and the Southwest and quickly convert them into health solutions in clinics across the state. The National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), an arm of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), issued the $23-million, five-year award, bringing UNM’s Clinical & Translational Science Center (UNM CTSC) into a 55-member NIH national powerhouse group of biomedical research institutions.
