The University of New Mexico Hospital and the VA Medical Center are the largest teaching hospitals in the state and serve as referral centers for a geographic area that extends into neighboring states. Add the fact that UNM Hospitals is a county hospital and Level 1 Trauma Center, and you get unparalleled clinical diversity under the umbrella of an outstanding academic institution committed to underserved communities.

… whether you aspire to be a leader in international health or preventative medicine, the basic sciences or clinical research. The program's close ties to the resources of UNM, our ranking in the top 40 National Institutes of Health grant funded departments and our designation as a NCI designation Cancer Center provide housestaff with all the resources they need to pursue investigational studies. Furthermore, for housestaff interested in international and public health, we have plenty of formal rotations abroad in India, Latin America and Africa as well as flexibility to accommodate resident-designed international electives. Ranked #2 in Rural Medicine, there are also clinical and research opportunities for those interested in state-wide rural projects. Finally, housestaff can pursue their MPH and other graduate degrees in research during their residency paid for by UNM.

The Ann Gateley Internal Medicine Residents’ Fund

For over 20 years Dr. Ann Gateley has led the Department of Internal Medicine Residents program. At the request of Dr. Gateley, The Ann Gateley, MD Internal Medicine Residents’ Fund has been established to provide additional financial resources for enhanced educational and professional development of Internal Medicine Residents.
