Curriculum

A new inpatient curriculum has been started this year lead by several of our hospitalists. The curriculum involves modules pertaining to many relevant inpatient topics, and over the course of the 3 year residency, each resident will have gone through each topic at least once.

A link to the old curriculum for clinical rotations is provided. An online version of the curriculum is being updated.

Conferences

Morning Report - This conference is held 3 times a week with a ward resident presenting a case followed by a discussion lead by the chief residents for the residents, interns, and medical students. The case presentation involves discussion of history taking, physical exam, labs, and differential diagnosis. Upper level residents are expected to be able to discuss the case and further workup. The ward resident then concludes morning report with a presentation involving a literature search of a clinical question that came up during the care of the patient. Because of the breadth of pathology at both of our main teaching hospitals, our cases vary from the bread & butter cases to the esoteric zebras.

Noon Conference - This conference is held during the weekdays at the VA and UH with a variety of topics and speakers including general medicine and subspecialty topics, special guest speakers, Journal Club, Morbidity / Mortality conference, and Clinical Pathology conference.

Grand Rounds - Once a week, the Internal Medicine department holds Grand Rounds with invited speakers from around the nation and from UNM. This is an opportunity to get exposure to many cutting edge research and treatments.

Subspecialty Conferences - While rotating through with the subspecialities, you will have the opportunity to attend their own conferences which include Rheumatology, Cardiology, Endocrine, and Pulmonary.
