BioMed 507 - ADVANCED MOLECULAR BIOLOGY

As part of the first year core curriculm for graduate students in the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program (BSGP), BioMed 507 is designed to help students make the transition from undergraduate courses, which are primarily taught from textbooks, to graduate study, which is primarily focused on primary literature and seminars. The course is organized by Dr. Scott Ness.

DNA REPAIR AND RECOMBINATION JOURNAL CLUB

DNA Repair and Recombination Journal Club (no course credit) meets every other week (day/time not set yet) for 1-2 hours. This journal club covers the recent literature in the DNA repair/recombination field, with an emphasis on cancer biology and related topics, and also includes informal presentation of research from the participants' labs.

HOST/PATHOGEN JOURNAL CLUB

BIOMED 625 (section 2)

Fridays, 9:30 - 10:30 AM
BMSB 389 (MGM LIBRARY)

The goal of this course is to expose students to the most current topics involving host defense against infectious diseases and the pathogenesis of specific infectious diseases. Topics are covered by presentation of current journal articles with discussion by students and faculty. Topics to be covered include: defensins and other antibiotic peptides, Toll receptors, complement, phagocytes, chemokines, vaccine strategies, Th1 and Th2 cytokine respones, cell biology of pathogen invasion, and the pathogenesis of specific viral and bacterial infections.

VIROLOGY JOURNAL CLUB

The format of the Journal Club will be to present, critically assess, and discuss the current literature on various topics of virology (e.g., replication, genetics, immunology, host interactions, transformation). 

There are no prerequisites for this course.  Presentations will be given by students, post-docs, and faculty.
