Jessica Smith, Ph.D. thesis defense cake -- HPV31 virus particles (red-hots) attach to extracellular matrix (yellow stuff) and filopodia (green projection at left) or the cell body. On the cell body the HPV31 virions enter via a lipid raft/caveolin-1-dependent mechanism. Caveolae and rab-5 (orange dots) are involved in entry prior to transfer to the endosomal pathway (see Virology 381:16, 2008).
