Residents work at the University of New Mexico Hospitals, the Raymond G. Murphy Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and the Children’s Hospital of New Mexico. Each facility serves distinctive patient populations, providing trainees with a broad range of clinical experiences. Faculty members supervise clinical services at all hospitals, ensuring that residents receive expert training in varied settings.
University of New Mexico Hospitals
The University of New Mexico Health Science Center is the primary teaching hospital for the UNM School of Medicine,
as well as the only Level One Regional Trauma Center for the state. Since 2007, the Bill and Barbara Richardson
Pavilion has housed emergency and critical care services, including a 24-bed neuron-intensive care unit. The 300
bed hospital is the major primary care resource for many Bernalillo County residents, and because of its specialty
clinics and advanced technologies, it is a referral resource for the entire state. Most Neurology inpatients are
admitted to a dedicated Neurology/Neurosurgery ward (5 South) in the University Hospital. This unit contains a
step-down/telemetry area as well as a 4-bed epilepsy monitoring unit.
Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center
The residency program’s other major teaching facility affiliated with the residency program is the VAMC, located about three miles from the University. Built in 1987, the Albuquerque VA is one of the newest additions to the nationwide system. The facility serves all veterans in New Mexico and provides secondary and tertiary care for west Texas, eastern Arizona and southern Colorado. The Neurology Service includes a two-room EMG suite and a full-time EEG lab. Under the supervision of four full-time and four part-time attending physicians, residents provide consultative service to the ED, medical and surgical intensive care units and the region’s only secured psychiatric ward. The VA also houses one of five national spinal cord injury units.
New Mexico Children’s Hospital
Located within the Bill and Barbara Richardson Pavilion, the new Children’s Hospital opened in 2007. Facilities
include a 34-bed general pediatrics ward, a 20-bed hematology/oncology and specialty care unit, a 15-bed rehabilitation
unit, a 52-bed Newborn Intensive Care Unit, and a 20-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. In addition, the new hospital
houses the region’s only dedicated 24-hour pediatric emergency department. The Children’s hospital provides the most
advanced pediatric care available. Services range from ambulatory care outpatient clinics, to acute and emergency care,
to inpatient units capable of the highest level of intensive care. The Children's Hospital of New Mexico cares for over
40,000 children each year, with more than 50 percent of them residing beyond the Albuquerque metro area.
