Marianne Berwick, PhD,became Head of the Epidemiology and Cancer Prevention Program and Chief of the Division of Epidemiology, Department of Internal Medicine in January 2004. Previously, she was Associate Professor of Epidemiology and Associate Attending Epidemiologist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in NY where she developed the center's first Molecular Epidemiology Laboratory.
Over the past 17 years, Dr. Berwick's research has focused on the etiology and prevention of melanoma skin
cancer. Her current research projects focus on gene-environment interaction and genetic
predisposition to cancer.
She is the PI on two large, NCI-funded research projects evaluating cancer susceptibility: GEM and Cancer
Susceptibility Among Fanconi Anemia Heterozygotes. GEM (Genes, Environment and Melanoma) is an international,
population-based study investigating the role of three classes of genes (cell cycle, pigmentary, and DNA repair)
and their interaction with ultraviolet radiation exposure in approximately 3,500 melanoma cases. Nine centers have
interviewed subjects in the United States, Canada, Italy, and Australia.
