Research Projects
The New Mexico Mammography Project is an NCI-funded project that began in 1992 as a pilot project of the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium (BCSC), a national group comprised of eight sites that collects and manages data on mammography use.
To date, the Consortium database contains over 1,000,000 breast imaging records
on approximately 100,000 patients. The project collects information on
demographics, risk factors, breast cancer symptoms and health history, previous
treatment for breast cancer, and radiology results on mammography patients
throughout the state of New Mexico. The project also examines tumor size,
mammography sensitivity and specificity and factors that affect sensitivity and
specificity, and the completeness and timeliness of patient follow-up. The
primary goals of the overall project are to measure mammography outcomes and
use, and ultimately to improve mammography screening.
