INTRODUCTION
The Health Professions Exposure Program (HPEP) is designed to provide high school and college students with the opportunity to interact with medical students, faculty, and health professionals. Aimed at recruiting students who are interested in a career path in medicine, this program exposes students to faculty at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine.
In this program, students will spend time with a UNM SOM Faculty member and will be exposed to the daily responsibilities of a practicing physician.
In order to eligible for this program a student must:
Be a currently enrolled in high school or college.
Have a sincere interest in the field of medicine, as evidence by a letter of interest.
Students will be placed with faculty who have volunteered for this program. No guarantee is made that dates requested will be available. Applications must be received 60 days prior to requested date.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES
1. Write a letter of interest. This should be no more than 1 page double spaced. It should address your experience to date, and your interest/goals in the health profession.
2. Fill out the application form. It can be downloaded (insert link). Application must be filled out completely.
3. Complete HIPAA training. Click this link (insert link) and follow the directions. When finished, print a copy of your completion certificate.
4. Mail your completed application, letter of interest and HIPAA certificate to:

5. Have a recommender (usually teacher or professor) complete the recommendation form and mail that to the same address.
6. Your application is considered complete when we receive all 4 completed documents.
Generally, you will receive information on your acceptance within 14 business days.
