80 Hour work Week Policy for Phase II and III Students

Based on the ACGME definition, "Duty Hours" are defined as all clinical and academic activities related to the training program, i.e., patient care (inpatient and outpatient), administrative duties related to patient care, the provision for transfer of patient care, time spent in-house during call activities, and scheduled activities such as conferences. Duty hours do NOT include expected reading and preparation time spent away from the duty site.

Duty hours for Phase II students should be limited to 80 hours per week, inclusive of all in-house activities.

Students will be provided with 1 day of 7 free from all educational and clinical responsibilities, averaged over a four-week period, inclusive of call. One day is defined as one continuous 24-hour period free from all clinical, educational, and administrative duties.

Adequate time for rest and personal activities will be provided to all Phase II students. This must consist of a minimum 8 hour (ideally 10-hour) time period provided between all daily duty periods and after in-house overnight call. For clerkships that do not have in-house overnight call or that have a night float system, students may not always have a 10-hour rest period, but the duty hours will not extend past a maximum of 16 duty-hours.
