Scheduling for each phase in the medical student curriculum happens at certain times of the year.
Phase I is broken up into two years [Phase I-1 and Phase I-2] and encompasses the basic science components of the curriculum. Phase I components are Human Structure, Function and Development [HSFD], Genetics & Neoplasia, Infection & Immunity, Neuroscience, CV/Pulmonary, Practical Immersion Experience [PIE], GI/Nutrition, Renal/Endocrinology, Human Sexuality and Reproduction, Research Block and Transition Block.
Phase I Scheduling for both Phase I-1 and I-2 is automatic since all class members go through all rotations together. PIE and Phase I Continuity Clinic are scheduled through the Preceptorship Office located in Family Practice Building, Room 116.
Phase II begins the clinical component of the curriculum. This phase includes core clinical rotations in Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Surgery as well as Phase II Continuity Clinic and Perspectives in Medicine [PIM].
Phase II Scheduling for Phase I-2 students is done online through STROLS usually in February during Phase I-2. Phase II Continuity Clinic are scheduled through the Preceptorship Office. Perspectives in Medicine is scheduled through the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education, BMSB 114.
Phase III continues the clinical components of the curriculum. Phase III includes required clerkships in Direct Patient Care, Intensive Care, Comprehensive Ambulatory Care and a New Mexico Preceptorship. Additional specialty elective clerkships may be taken at UNM or other approved locations and should bring the elective total to 32 weeks.
Phase III Scheduling for Phase II students is done online through STROLS usually in late February through early March between the 5th and 6th Phase II rotations. The Preceptorship elective is scheduled through the Preceptor Office. Any elective credit rotations taken away from UNM must be pre-approved by CSPE.
