Phase III Scheduling Meeting

In January, the Dean of Students meets with the rising Phase III students to discuss Phase III Scheduling.

Phase III Clerkship Options

Direct Patient Care Requirement

Direct Patient Care credit clerkships are categorized as either In-Patient or Intensive Care. Phase III students are required to complete eight weeks of Direct Patient Care credit - four weeks each of In-Patient and Intensive Care clerkships. Students may take additional DPC courses to count as elective credit.

Students may receive DPC credit for courses taken at other institutions by requesting DPC and Phase III Elective Credit approval from CSPE II.

Programs must fulfill the following requirements to receive Direct Patient Care credit.

  1. The student must act as a sub-intern, assuming primary responsibility for overall care in an in-patient setting.
  2. Full-time physician supervision must be provided on site or by telephone.
  3. The experience must include initial or early patient contact, history and physical examination, formulation of problem list, diagnostic plan, therapeutic plan, writing orders, patient follow-up, progress notes and discharge notes.
  4. In clerkships requiring on call activity the student's activity must be in rotation with intern schedules (including night and weekend call).
  5. No Direct Patient Care rotation may be less than four weeks. Travel or absence for pursuit of residency positions is not allowed during a Direct Patient Care clerkship, except with written permission of the service.

Comprehensive Ambulatory Care Requirement

Students will be required to take Comprehensive Ambulatory Care, a new ambulatory rotation. The rotation will be offered ONLY on the following rotation dates.

Comprehensive Ambulatory Care Dates:

2008 - 2009

4/28/08-5/25/08

8/18/08-9/14/08

11/10/08-12/7/08

1/5/09-2/1/09

2/2/09-3/1/09

New Mexico Preceptorship Requirement

The Preceptorship requirement is the only requirement not scheduled by the Office of Student Services. Check here for a description of the NM Preceptorship and scheduling information. Students may take an additional four week preceptorship to count as Elective Credit.

Elective Credit

A minimum of 16 weeks in Phase III must be scheduled as Elective credit. All courses listed in the Clerkship Catalog are approved for elective credit, including the preceptorships.

Elective Credit for Required Research

Students may receive elective credit in Phase III for required research according to the following criteria.

Students are limited to eight weeks total in the curriculum for required research. As four weeks is devoted to research in Phase I, students may receive four weeks elective credit in Phase III for research.

Students who wish to receive Phase III elective credit for required research must register as they would for other rotations. An evaluation form will be sent to the research mentor at the end of the block for a grade to be reported, just as it is for other rotations. Required Research rotations are graded on a Credit/No Credit basis.

Elective Credit - Away Rotations

Courses not listed in the Clerkship Catalog and courses at other institutions must be approved in advance by CSPE for Elective Credit. Please see Phase III Elective Credit Request for additional information.

International Clerkships

International Clerkships carry additional requirements that must be satisfied in order for CSPE to grant approval. Click here for additional information.

Phase II LOA Rescheduling

Most Phase III clerkships have prerequisites stating that all or specific Phase II clerkships must be completed. Students who were granted an LOA to miss one or more clerkships during Phase II will be required to schedule those Phase II courses prior to any Phase III clerkships.  Students will be scheduled on a space available basis after the rising Phase II students have been scheduled and in consultation with clerkship directors and CSPE. The Office of Student Services will notify students of Phase II assignments prior to students accessing STROLS to schedule Phase III clerkships. Phase II Clerkships begin April 21, 2008.
