Student Stipends (Policy)  (Adopted May 2003)
Description  |  Application / Eligibility  |  Workload
Reappointment
  |  Termination  |  Stipends Available
Description
Stipends are based upon contractual guidelines established by the funding organization. Most stipends are paid once a semester usually in the middle of the term.
This policy was developed in accordance to the Office of Graduate Studies policy on assistantships
Application and Eligibility
Stipends are determined by funding organizations and based on application guidelines of funding sources. To receive a stipend, a student must work with their faculty advisor or coordinator of the funding source for the Occupational Therapy Graduate Program. The faculty advisor or coordinator will explain the stipends and provide applications to interested students. A student must meet the following criteria:
Have been formally admitted in the Occupational Therapy Graduate Program and by the Office of Graduate Studies at the University of New Mexico.
Be currently enrolled at the University of New Mexico for a minimum for 6 hours of course work, thesis or dissertation hours which count towards the graduate degree, and 3 hours during the Summer session. Courses taken for AUDIT are not accepted as part of the minimum hours.
Maintain a 3.0 grade point average in graduate course work. Students on Type 1 and Type 2 probation are ineligible to hold a stipend. Students on Type 3 probation may provisionally hold a stipend for one semester.
Be within the 5 year time limit for completion of the MOT degree.
Workload
During the Fall and Spring semesters a student may not be engaged in stipend related work for more than 30 hours per week or .25 FTE when enrolled full-time of .50 FTE when enrolled part-time. Stipend recipients may not concurrently hold a University of New Mexico staff position.
Reappointments
By definition, stipends are term appointments. Students should not assume that they would be reappointed merely because no notification of termination at the end of the appointment period has been received. Reappointments are contingent upon the continuing availability of funds and satisfactory performance of the stipend recipient.
Termination Before End of Appointment Period
The graduate unit will make notification of termination, and a copy of this notification will be forwarded to the Occupational Therapy Graduate Program. In the case of students who are placed on academic probation, the Occupational Therapy Graduate Program will terminate the contract and notify the appropriate graduate unit. The stipend for assignments that are terminated before the end of the appointment period, either by voluntary resignation or dismissal, will be prorated for the period during which the assistant was employed.

Stipends Currently Offered to UNM Occupational Therapy

Leadership Education in Neurodevelopment Disabilities (LEND)
Program to improve the health and quality of life of children with neurodevelopmental disabilities and their families by providing professionals from the required and other disciplines with the skills to positively impact the system of health care delivery in New Mexico, the Southwest region, and the nation.

Rural Health Interdisciplinary Program (RHIP)
The Rural Health Interdisciplinary Program (RHIP) brings together students from many health professions for shared learning experiences. Participants use Problem-Based Learning (PBL) to develop skills and appreciation for an interdisciplinary model of health care problem solving. In addition, students gain practical experience working in rural health care settings. The rural component of the RHIP provides rural communities an opportunity to recruit and retain graduating students as health care providers.
