Specialty Extension Services

UNM Specialty Extension Services (SES) provides practice relief and regular outreach clinics with special emphasis on the specialty needs of New Mexico’s rural communities.  The goal of SES is to better meet the health needs of New Mexico’s widely dispersed citizens and health professionals.

Objectives:

  • Provide practice relief to New Mexico specialty physicians and providers in need of time away from their practice to meet personal needs such as vacation, sick leave and continuing education.
  • Expand the scope of practice of existing health professionals in local communities.
  • Give small communities without access to certain specialty services regularly scheduled clinics based on their requests and needs.
  • Recruit and retain scarce physician specialists into areas of need across the state. Often, SES assists with specialty clinics while a community recruits a physician.
  • Link education and service delivery with new technologies and outreach programs
  • Coordinate outreach clinics provided by UNM physicians.
  • Expand referrals and diversify the patient mix for UNM faculty, students and resident trainees.
