Legacy/Kellogg CV - Tobacco Use Cessation and Prevention Initiative
Is a four-year, $825,000 grant awarded to the UNMHSC. Daniel Derksen, MD, Associate Professor and Director of the UNM Center for Community Partnerships is the Principal Investigator.
The proposal addresses the primary goals of the Legacy Foundation of:
- reducing youth tobacco use;
- reducing exposure to second-hand smoke among all ages and populations;
- increasing successful quit rate among all ages and populations utilizing new and innovative cessation programs.
The American Legacy Foundation was funded by the Master Settlement Agreement that supplements state efforts to:
- reduce youth tobacco use
- decrease exposure to second-hand smoke
- improve successful quit rates
- decrease disparities in access to prevention and cessation services
The Foundation awards $40 to 50 million per year across the U.S. The initiatives include:
- Statewide Youth Movement Against Tobacco Use - a $35 million, 3-year project, 17 awardees (NM received a planning grant)
- Unsolicited Grants Program - up to $100,000 for a one year award, no cash match required, must address one of Legacy's goals utilizing an innovative approach
- Legacy/Kellogg Community Voices - an $8 million, four-year demonstration project awarded to 11 sites to establish and support tobacco cessation or prevention efforts for disadvantaged communities served by the Community Voices program of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation (UNM received a four year award)
- Priority Populations Initiative - $21 million, three-year initiative to reduce disparities in tobacco control. Two rounds: first round - 32 of 200 applications funded (in NM, the Albuquerque Service Unit of the Indian Health Service received an award). Second round - Legacy received 315 applications, has allocated $12 million, will award about 30 to 35 applicants of the 315 in the Spring of 2002.
