Department of Pathology : UNM School of Medicine

Cytopathology Fellowship

Relatively new, the cytopathology fellowship at UNM is a one year, mixed clinical and research experience that occurs at UNM HSC, Presbyterian Hospital, and TriCore Reference Laboratories (TRL). Although the schedule is somewhat flexible, it includes at least six months of clinical training and three months of research. Emphasis is placed on cementing diagnostic accuracy in Pap smears and non-gyn specimens such as FNA specimens, endoscopic-guided biopsies, and specimens obtained by washings, lavage, and brushings. Laboratory management principles are taught both at UNM HSC and TRL and include QA/QC specific to the cytopathology laboratory, new technique analysis, and personnel/budgeting issues. Research comprises utilizing techniques such as PCR, FISH, and immunocytochemistry applied to cytology specimens to hone diagnostic and prognostic information. A plethora of cytology specimens are available (more than 120, 000 Pap smears and 4000 non-gyns including FNA's collected, processed, and analyzed per year at the training sites), but the fellow also (when time permits in this busy year!) reviews a large teaching set and is encouraged to add to it. At the successful completion of this year, the fellow is eligible to sit for subspecialty certification in cytopathology.
