Department of Pathology : UNM School of Medicine

Hematopathology Fellowship

A one or two years comprehensive, integrated diagnostic training in all aspects of hematopathology, including a wide spectrum of benign and neoplastic disorders in pediatric and adult patients. Fellow clinical rotations alternate between our University Hospital bone marrow/anatomic pathology service and TriCore Reference Laboratories, our large centralized laboratory, where the hematopathology consultation cases are handled. Molecular, cytogenetic, coagulation, and research rotations are also part of the training experience.

Clinical case material is from a variety of sources:

Comprehensive specialized testing: (Emphasis is placed on cost-effective diagnostic assessment)

These specialized tests are integrated with clinical and morphologic assessment in the final diagnostic interpretation. These tests are performed at TriCore Reference Laboratories, which houses large automated hematology and coagulation services in conjunction with specialty laboratories for esoteric testing.

Research opportunities:

Laboratories located at the UNM Cancer Center contain state-of-the-art equipment:

Both HSC Pediatric and Adult Oncology Services provide treatment for New Mexico patients of all ages. The HSC actively participates in Children’s Oncology Group (COG) and Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) clinical trials. Our Cancer Research Facility provides specialized diagnostic/ investigational testing on COG and SWOG patient samples nationwide. The Cancer Research and Treatment facility recently received NCI designation and is the only NCI center in New Mexico.
