The Profession of Medical Technology

Medical Laboratory Sciences or Medical Technology is the rapidly expanding health profession of clinical laboratory medicine. With tremendous advances in medical research in recent years, modern health care has become increasingly dependent on a growing variety of complex laboratory tests to diagnose and treat disease. The Medical Technologist is a professional clinical laboratory scientist who, as a member of the health care team, is responsible for providing this essential testing service in the fields of:

  • Clinical Chemistry
  • Clinical Hematology
  • Clinical Microbiology
  • Urinalysis
  • Blood Banking
  • Serology

Additionally, Medical Technologists are preferentially hired by several leading biotechnology firms to assist in research. Medical Laboratory Scientists and Technologists require a broad educational background and clinical lab training to work in these areas of a hospital lab. They are responsible for the quality and accuracy of analysis of patient samples, which provide critical information to physicians and primary care providers who are treating patients.
