How the Course is Presented:
Each student is scheduled individually in the hematology laboratory. The student receives instruction and performs the routine work in the laboratory under the direct supervision of the clinical hematology instructors. Suggested time frame follows:

Rotation Length: 5 weeks = 25 days

Clinical Rotation Theory - How Theory is Covered:
Hematology and Hemostasis theory has been covered under prerequisite MLS Courses. Clinical site instructors of Clinical Hematology are not responsible for repeating theory lectures.

Clinical Rotation Performance Objectives:
For MLS 352: Students will be able to:

  1. Receive, process, and distribute specimens.
  2. Use appropriate safety precautions in handling specimens and performing assays.
  3. Operate automated equipment including slide stainer, cell counter, and Coagulation instrumentation as follows:
    • Set-up, specimen handling, performance, daily maintenance, QC procedures, minor trouble shooting, recording and communication of results according to lab protocol must be included in the operation.
    • Performance of test on automated equipment will include tests as listed on checklist.
    • Other automated procedures may be added by the clinical lab as available and deemed appropriate.
  4. Perform the following manual procedures including specimen preparation and handling, procedure performance, QC, minor trouble-shooting and evaluation, reference curves and calculation where appropriate, recording, reporting and communication of results according to lab protocol for:
    1. Differential
    2. Retic Count
    3. Sed Rate
    4. Manual Cell Counts
    5. Other manual procedures, such as Sickle Cell may be added by the clinical area as they are available.
For MLS 452:
  1. The student should observe or assist a Hematology supervisor in performing any of the following quality assurance or managerial duties:
    1. method comparison
    2. analysis of long term QC data
    3. new method write-up and institution
    4. new instrument evaluation
    5. new procedure evaluation
    6. reagent lot number performance verification
    7. supervisor discretion

Clinical Rotation Professional Development:
The affective domain objectives are the same as those for all MLS courses and are listed in MD LAB 320 Syllabus.

Evaluation:
Grades for the Basic Hematology/Hemostasis Rotation, MLS 352, will be based on the following two areas. Performance and Professionalism areas must each be passed with a grade of 72% or better, in order for the final grade to be calculated.

Performance Evaluation
- Performance Checklist (P/F)
66% of final grade
Professionalism
- Professional Development Form
34% of final grade

Grades for the Advanced Hematology Rotation, MLS 452, will be based on the following two areas which must each be passed with a grade of 72% or better, to calculate the final grade.

Theory Exam 50% of final grade
QC Project 50% of final grade
