Welcome Letter From Department Chair

Welcome to the Department of Pediatrics at the University of New Mexico.

It has been an exciting time in the Department: a new group of Residents have arrived and the new class of Medical Students have started.  There is a sense of excitement in the air that always comes with new learners.

Summer offers a break from the norm as several camps take place.  Camp Rising Sun is a camp for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders that is coordinated by the Center for Disease and Disability and the Camp Enchantment Cancer Camp and Hemophilia Camp are organized by the Hematology/Oncology program.  These camps give staff and physicians an opportunity to interact with their patients in a non-clinical setting and offer unique educational experiences for students.  The children who attend these camps leave the world of hospital and clinic visits behind to have fun, create new friendships and just be kids for awhile.

We have recently learned that the University of New Mexico received the Clinical and Translational Science Award.  UNM becomes one of only 55 Clinical and Translational Science Center’s in the country.  This elite designation will provide us with many research opportunities which will benefit the children and adults of New Mexico.

We are proud to be the Children’s Hospital of New Mexico.  Our commitment to excellence in clinical care, research and education can be seen in the miracles that occur every day.  Our faculty is comprised of dedicated generalists and specialist physicians ready to tackle the most challenging cases and provide compassionate and comprehensive care.

To meet growing needs, we are seeking out top physicians from around the world, and strengthening and adding programs in clinical care and research.  Our Medical School will expand by 25 students with the inception of the Combined BA/MD Program, enhancing our education mission.  We maintain a close relationship with the communities we serve and continue to strengthen and create new relationships throughout the state.

It is an honor to be Chair of the Department of Pediatrics and work alongside our exceptional faculty, residents and staff and collaborate with the outstanding physicians throughout the state.  I encourage you to look around our website and learn more about us.
